Action Society calls for urgent action to deal with SA's 'femicide epidemic'

Civil society group Action Society is calling for Police Minister Bheki Cele to resign over his failure to deal with the DNA backlogs at SAPS forensic Science labs. Despite promises to reduce the backlog which stands at around 200,000 cases, the backlogs still persist.

The state of affairs is denying justice to victims of gender based violence. It has since emerged that an ambitious plan to tackle the backlog has been bogged down by negotiations with unions over overtime. But Action Society says the minister has not shown any urgency in dealing with South Africa’s femicide epidemic. Spokesperson Elanie Van Der Walt speaks to Newzroom Afrika.
