In a win for criminal justice reform, as announced in the 25 May budget speech, Cele has allocated an additional budget of R100 million to provinces over and above baselines, to support all programmes related to GBVF Action plans and FCS Unit resourcing.
The backlog has been reduced by 38.71% from 251 603 to 154 204. To this end, an additional allocation of R50 million will support all Buccal Samples and Collection kits operations.
South African Police Service (SAPS) will sustain the Forensic Services baseline allocation previously increased, to allow for implementation of the amended DNA Bill and reduction of the backlog.
Vanessa Lynch talks to eNCA about what this means.
