New DNA collection and storage rules kick in soon

New rules governing how DNA can be taken and stored come into force at the end of the month and include requirements that DNA samples of people on parole for certain crimes also be kept on file.

This follows the signing of the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act which sets out how DNA samples may be obtained and kept, and by whom.

It also covers when DNA information must be removed from records, who can access the sample information, how it can be shared with foreign authorities, and how the DNA of people who work with DNA is used and stored during processes to eliminate them as subjects in investigations.
