Making alleged perpetrators of crime provide DNA samples will not help victims if the national backlog of DNA results is not dealt with.
This was the sentiment shared by women’s right organisation, Mother of Nations, following a recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The president said that as from February, any person arrested and charged with a schedule 8 offence will be required to provide a DNA sample which will be uploaded onto the National Forensics DNA database.
Founder of the Mother of Nations Mathabiso Cele said she does not see this succeeding, since there is already a multi-year backlog at the National Forensic Science Laboratories which is delaying prosecution of hundreds of cases across the country.
