This event will provide the media and journalists with short forensic presentations and the opportunity to engage directly with numerous forensic experts from Africa and overseas. Led by a panel of forensic experts from South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and the United States, you will have the opportunity to hear about DNA profiling and human identification in a variety of contexts, including crime scene investigations, mortuaries, and during conflict and mass disaster situations. The panel will also discuss the applications and limitations of DNA technology, and how it is currently being used in forensic practice in Africa. Our esteemed host for the workshop is Dr Nechama Brodie, a respected journalist, author, and researcher on social violence from the Wits Centre for Journalism. Dr Brodie will facilitate the discussion and invites participants to submit questions in advance of the workshop.

Adv Bonnie Currie-Gamwo Special Director of Public Prosecutions: Sexual Offences and Community Affairs. She is the visionary behind the Thuthuzela Care Centre model, one-stop centres that reduce secondary victimisation and help buiolding cases ready for successful convictions

Mr Yasin Farah
Somalia
Yasin Farah was recently appointed by the Attorney General of the federal government of Somalia as the National Forensic Expert. Prior to taking this position, Yasin served 5 years as a Senior Forensic Science Advisor at the Puntland Bureau of Forensic Science in Somalia. Yasin is a forensic scientist with over 15 years experience in working and managing various laboratories in the forensic science, analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical fields from institutions in Sweden, the UK and Somalia. He is trained in forensic crime scene investigations by INTERPOL.

Dr François-Xavier Laurent
INTERPOL
Dr. François-Xavier Laurent holds a PhD in Molecular Genetics. He was recruited in 2013 by the French Forensic Police as Head of Research & Development in Forensic genetics. Since 2020, he has been the DNA Database manager at the INTERPOL General Secretariat, in charge of DNA Database & I-Familia.


Forensic Psychologist
Prof. Gérard Labuschagne
South Africa
Gérard is a Director of L&S Threat Management. He was the Section Head of the South African Police Service. He is a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa & the British Psychological Society. Gérard is an admitted Advocate of the High Court, a trained homicide investigator by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. He is one of only two US Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) Certified Threat Managers (CTM) from the African continent and currently holds an Honorary Associate Professorship in the Division of Forensic Medicine and Pathology at WITS.

Dr Antonel Olckers

Antonel has a PhD in human genetics (molecular biology) and specialised in forensic DNA evidence. She is registered at the HPCSA as a medical scientist in genetics. She has been practicing as a DNA expert witness in court cases in South Africa for the past 20+ years, and has testified in Magistrates-, Regional- and High Courts across South Africa.

United Nations NPO Gender Based Violence at United Nations. Experienced Advisor with a demonstrated history of working in the international child protection arena and health sector. Skilled in Microsoft packages, Management, Leadership. Strong professional with a Doctorate (Ph.D.) focused on Child Protection, Clinical Interventions, Criminal Justice.


Forensic Pathologist
Prof. Ryan Blumenthal
South Africa
Blumenthal. Ryan, MBChB (Pret), MMed (Med Forens) Pret, FC For Path (SA) Dip For Med (SA) PhD (Wits) Senior specialist forensic pathologist and associate professor at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Forensic Medicine. His chief field of interest is the pathology of trauma of lightning (keraunopathology).

Ms Auckloo Asha
Mauritius
Asha Auckloois a Forensic Scientist at Forensic Science Laboratory Mauritius. She holds a Master of Science in Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology. She works as a Senior Forensic Scientist. She is also involved in training delivery to stakeholders such as Police and Crime Scene Managers in various aspects of Forensic Science. Asha is currently serving as JCI Executive Vice President.

Prof. Robert Green
UK
Currently Reader in Forensic Science at the University of Kent. Prior to joining the University, Bob worked with the Forensic Science Service and the UK Home Office. During this time, he was responsible for initiating the Home Office’s work leading the national program of cold case rape investigation. In 2008, he was made an OBE for his services to forensic science. He currently Vice President of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences

Ms Carla Pessanha Loque

Carla holds an LL.M in International Criminal Law, specialization in Human Trafficking for Sexual and Commercial Exploitation, Human Rights and Global Environmental Law, Bachelor of Law. She has served in a number of programme, policy and technical functions in the United Nations, European Commission, national governments, including high-quality research, policy-making, technical assistance, extensive management, leadership at a strategic level. She provides technical assistance for the European Commission, non-for-profit and private sectors.

Mr Stephen Fonseca
ICRC - ACMS
Stephen Fonseca’s career includes 25 years in medicolegal death investigation. He has extensive experience working with missing persons and the dead, including unidentified bodies in conflict, migration and disasters. He was a coroner in Canada for 16 years before joining the ICRC’s Forensic Team in 2013, and he is currently the Manager of the ICRC’s African Centre for Medicolegal Systems.

Mr Innocent Makasa
Zambia
I have a unique work experience over my 25 years of work experience; 9 years as a criminal investigator in the Zambia Police Service, 8 years working as head of the Clinical Laboratory at the Zambia Police Hospital, and the last 8 years (and current) working as a Forensic Analyst Specialized in Forensic DNA Analysis with the Zambia Police and now the National Forensic Science and Biometrics Department. I have not included much of this outline in the attached bio.

Mr Mark Mogle
ICITAP
Mark Mogle joined the U.S Department of Justice’s International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP) in 2005 and currently serves as Assistant Director for Forensic Science. During this time, Mr. Mogle has supported forensic development in over 30 countries including many that achieved international accreditation. Prior to joining ICITAP, Mr. Mogle worked for the Pennsylvania State Police and assisted the laboratory achieve accreditation in 2001. He is a member of member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Dr Nechama Brodie
South Africa
Nechama is a journalist and the author of several best-selling non-fiction works and two novels. She is a lecturer at the Wits Centre for Journalism, acting coordinator of the Wits Justice Project, and continues to write for South African and international titles about data, health, misinformation, policy, heritage, politics, gender, crime, data, culture, and (on the odd occasion) about sport. Nechama holds a PhD in journalism and media studies

Tim Schellberg provides consultancy services in the USA and Internationaly.He served as a lawyer and governmental affairs advisor to the Police. For the last twenty-two years he & GTHGA has become the world’s foremost experts on forensic DNA database legislation, public policy and law.
