Forensic expert explains the critical role of DNA testing

DNA has revolutionized the way justice is pursued, especially in cases of rape and sexual assault, where it can provide critical, objective evidence. Despite this potential, South Africa is currently facing a crisis in its forensic system, with a staggering backlog of over 140,000 rape cases awaiting DNA analysis. This alarming figure not only delays justice for survivors but also undermines public trust in the system's ability to respond.

Dr. Vanessa Lynch (pictured above), Regional Director for DNAforAfrica, speaks to Health-e News about the urgent reforms needed to strengthen South Africa’s forensic capacity and ensure that DNA evidence delivers on its promise.
